Creating an Earache Oil

Not that long ago, a virus rolled through the area causing ear pain/pressure. This was the first time we had EVER dealt with an ear related issue in our family but thankfully I was ready.

I knew that I needed a remedy that was going to decrease inflammation in the ear, which would be causing pain from pressure, but it also should help kill any bacteria that may be in the ear. While the illness was caused by a virus (thus not bacteria), the concern was the inflammation in the ear not allowing proper drainage, which would lead to fluid build up, which could lead to a bacteria breeding ground.

This remedy in its most basic form you most likely already have in your home. Garlic and olive oil. The addition of herbs, like Calendula and Mullein, help to reduce inflammation.

  • 1 clove garlic, peeled
  • 1 tablespoon dried Calendula flowers
  • 1 tablespoon dried Mullein leaves/flowers
  • Olive oil to cover herbs
  • Dark amber glass bottle with dropper

To Make:

Add herbs to top pot of double boil and cover in olive oil. In a double boiler on low heat, infuse olive oil with Garlic, Calendula, and Mullein for 1-2 hours, making sure you DON'T BURN YOUR HERBS. The bottom pot of the double boiler should always have adequate water in it (this is from lots of personal experience).

After infusing the oil, strain through a mesh strainer with a coffee filter or cheesecloth. Press/squeeze the herbs to get all the good oil out of them. Discard because herbs with oils shouldn't be composted.

Bottle, label, and store for up to 3 months.

To Use:

Place bottle in bowl of warm, close to body temperature, water for several minutes. This warms up the oil so when you put them in the ear, it doesn't hurt.

Place 3-4 drops in each ear, about 4 times a day.

Now, the only safety precaution for this remedy is: don't use it if the ear drum is punctured. That will require care of your medical professional.
