Creating Your Own Four Thieves Vinegar

Looking back, I think switching to vinegar as a cleaner was probably the first natural alternative we ever did. Then everything else just kind of avalanched on top of it and I am so grateful for everything.

When the essential oil crazy of Young Living and doTerra hit...it never occurred to me that a company would promote such products even when they weren't safe. More specifically, Thieves or OnGuard blends. These blends are contraindicated for pregnant women, children under 6 (some say under 10), and those with epilepsy.

The blend contains a variety of essential oils with constituents than can cause of serious issues.

The blend is actually an effective blend...HOWEVER... it is still super effective in the whole plant form.

You can combine the herbs and burn them (smudging for example) OR you can create your own Four Thieves vinegar. This is great for cleaning everything...which is what a lot of people enjoy the essential oils for.

This is a very informal recipe because it doesn't need to be exact. Play with the amounts of herbs to customize it just for you. I am not a huge fan of clove so I use just a little in my formula. You can use fresh or dried herbs.

Ingredients:

  • Cinnamon sticks
  • Clove buds
  • Rosemary leaf
  • Eucalyptus leaf
  • Lavender buds
  • Orange peels
  • White vinegar
  • Large mason jar
  • Glass spray bottle

To Make:

Combine all the herbs into a large mason jar and cover with vinegar.  Let sit for 4-6 weeks, shaking from time to time.

Strain out the herbs, saving the liquid (which should now be dark and smell delicious). Dilute this 50% with water in a glass spray bottle. We use this one. Store the rest in a glass jar away from light. Be sure to label it, although one sniff and you will know what it is.
